we ride moto tours

These tips are for those of you who plan to do your first moto tour.
The older among us, always think that we know it all; we are undoubtedly wrong.
There is always something else to be learnt.
SECURITY
-
The final objective is always arriving ... to places we will remember in the years to come. DO NOT create the conditions for an accident.
-
As the bumpers are none other than ourselves, we cannot make mistakes. No caution is ever too much.
-
In order to boost enjoyment, plan as little as possible. An ideal route is a flexible one, with tons of alternatives to battle tiredness and weather.
-
Do not hang on to a tight schedule; it is not enjoyable and might even be dangerous! Weather and circumstances, must dictate the pace of the trip.
-
Never trick yourself into thinking - you have to get somewhere -. It is the easiest way of buying an accident.
-
Concerning travelling distances in kms/day on asphalt, they range from 250 to 800 kms/day. Alternate between long and short travelling days.
-
Do not drive 700 kms for more than two consecutive days.
-
Stretching your legs as often as possible is paramount. In order to achieve this, do not schedule your gas and lunch stops together.
-
"Serious" mountains roads, entail "serious" weather. Besides, in mountains the weather fluctuates abruptly. Prepare yourselves to cross through great heights (+ 2000 mts) with adequate equipment.
-
Plan your tour through roads of your ability level. A moto tour is not a good place for learning to ride.
-
Get a thorough medical examination before you leave: dentist, blood pressure, heart condition, etc. Do not forget your medical insurance.
How do I prep a route ?
1) After picking the region you want to visit, purchase paper Maps of said area.
2) Calculate approximate distances with Google Maps.
3) In order to grasp the big picture of the journey, input all data in a travel spreadsheet.
4) During the journey I help myself with the GPS, but I also keep my paper Map, handy at all times in order to check alternative routes.

What kind of routes should I pick?
For off road, there’s nothing like Latin America.
For asphalt curves, history and landscapes, nothing like Europe.
USA entails large distances, but sights & roads are breathtaking,
especially in the West.

long trips
For long trips, you will need to complement your equipment. Anyway, try to pack as little as posible; you'll travel lighter and have less things to worry about.
One good general tip: try to pack the heavier things, the lower possible on the bike.
Also, keep the weights balanced at both sides of the motorcycle.
